Sustainable economy: Parliament adopts new reporting rules for multinationals (10/11/22)

The European Parliament passed the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) on 10 November. The CSRD replaces the incumbent Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) as the European Union's ESG disclosure regulation for listed companies. It now also includes listed SMEs, large non-EU companies, and large private companies. ESG reporting by these companies will also be standardised, unlike the NFRD, which permitted over 1700 reporting frameworks.

'We are at the bottom of the wave': greenwashing litigation just gearing up (16/11/22)

Lawyers across the US and Europe are expecting greenwashing litigation to rise significantly. Several ESG-related legal cases have already happened in 2022, including the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)'s settlement with the Bank of New York Mellon for misleading ESG information. In addition, the UK could join the EU and US as a jurisdiction of high-profile cases. Its Financial Conduct Authority and Competition and Markets Authority have stated they will closely monitor activity and take action where appropriate.

European Parliament to summon Elon Musk (17/11/22)

European Parliament officials have revealed that the new Twitter owner, Elon Musk, will be invited to Brussels to discuss the company's possibly weakened privacy standards. Since taking over the tech giant, Musk has fired most of Twitter's regulator-facing staff. The EU is a global leader in digital rights, with rules that cover privacy, content and digital competition. How the EU deals with Twitter and Elon Musk will set an example of its ambitions in the digital rights arena.

US lawmaker slams JPMorgan, Wells Fargo for involvement with anti-ESG body (16/11/22)

Congressman Sean Casten criticised JP Morgan and Wells Fargo’s affiliation with an “anti-ESG body”, sending letters to this effect to the two firms, alongside 15 other Democrats. The body in question, the State Financial Officers Foundation (SFOF), has coordinated opposition to the SEC's proposed climate disclosure rules and supported fossil-fuel-friendly legislation, according to a New York Times investigation.

Climate analysis likely understates risk, say FSB and NGFS (16/11/22)

A report by the Financial Stability Board (FSB) and Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS) found that measures used for exposure and vulnerability to climate risks are “likely understated”, meaning the true extent of financial risks from the climate crisis are also understated.
