TLDR: Altice International(AI) lacks ambitious group-wide specified emissions targets. However, it has low emissions intensity compared to peers. AI’s Israeli subsidiary has significant exposure to Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The group also has numerous legal proceedings pertaining to competition and tax violations which have resulted in significant fines.

Entain’s odds are good but no dice for ESG-minded Europeans (9fin) (1/12/2022)

ESG concerns and incoming UK regulations stopped some European investors from rolling the dice on gaming operator Entain’s (Ba1/BB/BB) dual-currency offering. The UK government said in November its long-awaited White Paper on the industry, which would include new regulation recommendations, will be published “in the coming weeks”.

The house always wins — UK gambling White Paper due imminently (9fin) (29/11/2022)

Gambling companies exposed to the UK market – including 888 Holdings, Entain, Flutter Entertainment, Inspired Entertainment, and Playtech – are set to learn imminently how they will be affected by a much-delayed government White Paper on gambling reform. While the government is unlikely to be so strident as to strangle the industry, industry executives have lobbied the government and warned that tighter regulation could spur black market gambling.

Florida pulls $2bln from BlackRock in largest anti-ESG divestment (1/12/2022)

Florida’s Chief Financial Officer, Jimmy Patronis, announced that his department will divest $2bn in assets managed by BlackRock due to political anti-ESG motivations. The move drew a sharp response from BlackRock, with the company saying that the action puts politics over investment interests. Patronis accused BlackRock of focusing more on ESG than investor returns.

The more asset owner sustainable investment strategies change the more they stay the same says FTSE Russell (29/11/2022)

FTSE Russell conducted its sixth annual survey of 183 asset owners representing £3tr in assets on sustainable finance issues. 57% of participants cited mitigating long term risk as their primary reason for implementing sustainable investment practices. Societal good followed and then capturing returns, client demand, fiduciary duty, and finally regulatory requirements. The survey found that among ESG considerations, social themes are increasing as a priority area, surpassing climate change.

Credit Suisse aims to halve emissions intensity of investments by 2030 (1/12/2022)

Credit Suisse announced plans to halve the emissions intensity of investments across its funds by 2030 from a 2019 baseline. The report included plans to assess the climate plans of between 150-300 high emitting companies and focus on those that hold assets without clear impact reduction plans.

NBIM, Schroders, and JPMorgan AM named leads for PRI’s human rights initiative (1/12/2022)

The PRI human rights initiative which launched at PRI’s Barcelona conference includes investor giants like Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM), Schroders, and JPMorgan AM. The initiative seeks to engage investors in pushing for more respect for human rights among businesses. The initiative currently has over 220 investors representing $30tr in assets under management.

EC signs off on climate disclosure requirements for European banks (1/12/2022)

The European Commission has formally adopted requirements for EU banks to report on climate related risks and mitigative actions beginning in 2024. Regulated banks will be required to provide reports on how sector exposures are performing against net zero climate scenarios, the aggregate exposure of their top 20 carbon intensive firms and the ways in which the physical risks of climate change will impact their lending.

EU looks to exclude banks and funds from sustainability rules (1/12/2022)

EU ministers have pushed forth efforts to weaken the EU’s efforts to hold companies to account on their sustainability goals. A move pushed by France seeks to exempt banks and investment funds from regulation designed to force companies to report on environmental and human rights abuses in their supply chains.

EU’s proposed carbon removal rules open to greenwashing, say experts (28/11)2022

The EU’s proposal to certify removals of carbon from the atmosphere has been criticised for lacking detail on what permanent carbon removal will entail. The proposal has been criticised by experts for being at risk of allowing greenwashing and falling short of what is needed to reduce global emissions.

EU demands rapid response to Joe Biden’s $369bn green subsidy package (25/11/2022)

EU ministers have demanded a response to the US $369bn in green subsidies and its “buy American” provisions. The EU argues that the provisions are counter to free trade agreements and hope to avoid a trade war, especially while there is an ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

Rolls-Royce successfully tests hydrogen-powered jet engine (28/11/2022)

Rolls-Royce announced that it has successfully run an airplane engine on hydrogen, a first for the aviation industry. The ground tests used green hydrogen created by wind and tidal power. The aviation industry has a goal to become net zero by 2050.

SGX Group Launches Initiative To Recognise Sustainable Fixed Income (28/11/2022)

Singapore Exchange (SGX Group), a sustainable fixed income initiative, launched a plan to identify green, social, and sustainable fixed income securities that meet recognised standards. The investment must meet criteria, including having a reputable external reviewer, to be recognised. The SGX initiative is designed to allow investors to easily identify fixed income securities embarking on credible sustainable projects.

Sustainability advocates step up fight against anti-ESG after US midterms (30/11/2022)

US Democrats and activists have begun to ramp up their efforts to counter the Republican party's crackdown on ESG. They intend to do this by highlighting examples of companies using ESG to mitigate risk and increase profit and by engaging with state attorney generals.
