9fin x The Asia Group — What to expect from Japan's snap election?
- 9fin team
Sanae Takaichi assumed office not four months ago and is already running for reelection.
The prime minister believes that a snap vote would shore up support for her plans to boost government spending while cutting taxes — measures designed to ease the cost of living in Japan. But she also has her eye on stronger defense and has sounded hawkish on China.
What would a decisive victory for Takaichi mean for Japanese debt markets? And what if the prime minister fails in her bid for a greater majority in the lower house? And how might the vote impact the geopolitical balance of the region?
To hear answers to these questions and more, 9fin’s Asia editor Richard Macauley will be joined by Akihiro Tsuchiya, senior advisor at The Asia Group and former senior MOF official (Japan), as well as David Boling, principal at The Asia Group and former deputy assistant US trade representative for Japan.
